The dress code for golf is probably the most strict of all sports. This usually requires the golfer to go along to a golfing accessory or outfitters so they can be sure to obtain the correct attire. Although each club will have it’s own standards, there are certain aspects which almost every club will abide by. It is important to remember that some golf courses are very particular about the dress worn by the players and they would not permit any player unless he is adequately dressed. This is not only embarrassing but can be an awkward problem if you are barred from playing simply because there was some miscommunication regarding clothes to be worn.
As far as men and boys are concerned several things are found to be unsuitable in a golf course. The first is the use of shirts with no collar and the next is the use of shirts with no sleeves - neither of these are considered appropriate at any time. The next things are wearing jogging pants or shoes with metal spikes. clothes that have large or offensive logos will also be a reason for a golf club to turn you away. Men in addition to women are also forbidden to wear denim of any kind or foot ware that can be considered a sandal.
A man can, if he chooses, wear shorts and if he is sporting pants, they must be fitted - foot ware must be either proper sporting shoes or those especially designed for golf. If you are wearing golf shoes, ensure that they are soft spikes and are not metal spikes - most courses will not permit metal spikes on the green due to the damage that they can cause. Shirts can have long or short sleeves and you can always wear a turtleneck or a sweater. The socks that are worn must be at least ankle length and should be a solid color with only minimal and tasteful logos.
Women golfers should wear fitting shorts or skirts or even Capri’s. Usually women are not permitted to wear pants or anything made of denim. Remember though that shorts and skirts must not be too short and the general rule is no more than five inches above the knee. Although it not uncommon for a golf course to insist that the length of shorts and shirts is even longer. Women would also need to wear collared shirts unless they are sporting a pull over with a V-style neck.
Women are also permitted to wear a sleeveless shirt as long as it has a collar, and short sleeve as well as long sleeve shirts are also permitted. Their socks must be ankle length with proper golf shoes (or sports) and if they wish a hat or visor if they prefer. Socks ought to be solid colored and should not have any objectionable logos or designs on them. When taking along a guest to play alongside you, the same regulations apply - there are no exceptions because they are a guest. As stated above the exact dress code for the golf course where you play may vary, a quick check of their website, or a quick phone call should clear up any questions you have in regards to what is appropriate and what is not if you have any questions.
